Our Hometown Hero

On June 24, 2004 Christopher S. Cash, Company Commander of Alpha CO 1-120th Infantry, North Carolina Army National Guard, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country in Iraq.

During his lifetime, Chris was committed to helping others: his family, his friends, his co-workers, his community, and his country. His memory remains ever present in the hearts and minds of those he touched and inspired with his care and generosity.

It is his legacy of giving to others that we strive to carry on in honor of his memory.

Chris was born October 2, 1967 in Providence, Rhode Island and later moved to Maine where he graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1985. Captain Cash enlisted in the Army in 1986 and moved to North Carolina. He earned his first undergraduate degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1993. He later earned a second undergraduate and a master’s degree from East Carolina University in 1997 and 2002, respectively. Chris was the father to Christopher Jr. and Mathew Cash and the husband to Dawn Cash.

In addition to his military career, Captain Cash was active in his community. Chris was an exercise physiologist at ViQuest where he helped others achieve their personal health and fitness goals. As an avid runner, he ran marathons for Team in Training, a fundraiser for cancer research. He was excited to go to Iraq because he knew he could make a difference in helping others live the life they deserve. He touched the lives of all that he met and we will forever be blessed by knowing him.

On 24 June 2004, during a pre-dawn patrol of a main supply route in Baqubah, Iraq, Iraqi insurgents ambushed Captain Cash’s 3rd platoon. When they were ordered back to their Forward Operating Base Warhorse after a fierce fight, Captain Cash personally led his 1st platoon on a mission to secure two critical bridges in the center of the city. This mission led them through the same ambush site where his 3rd platoon was ambushed. While traveling to the bridges, 1st Platoon was engaged by insurgents. Before he thought about his own safety, he ordered his men to take cover. Captain Cash was mortally wounded by a machine gunner on top of one of the buildings.
